BHCPG Responds to Boston Globe Editorial

The Boston Globe recently outlined Four Concrete Ways Massachusetts Can Lower Health Care Costs. The Better Healthcare Policy Group (BHCPG) offered six additional, evidence-based recommendations to improve quality – a powerful, underutilized way to reduce costs and save lives.

🔹 Invest in Primary Care: We lag far behind top nations in primary care spending. It’s time to catch up.
🔹 Advance Value-Based Payment: Pay for outcomes, not just volume.
🔹 Empower Quality & Cost Oversight Agencies with the tools and funding to deliver real value.
🔹 Support Employers & Consumers with better data, incentives, and benefit designs.
🔹 Expose Price Variation: Shine a light on unjustified price gaps.
🔹 Ban Facility Fees at Nonacute Sites: Stop charging more for the same care just because of hospital ownership.

We may not be able to halt rising health care costs entirely, but we can spend more wisely. By investing in primary care, improving quality, and aligning payment with outcomes, Massachusetts can not only deliver better, more sustainable care but save lives and reduce employers’ costs.
