Optum makes first move into Mass. with acquisition of Reliant
Boston Business Journal 5/11/2017
Reliant reported $556 million in revenue in 2014 — the most recent year available. The 500-physician group has been on its own since leaving a loose affiliation with Atrius Health in 2014. It decided shortly thereafter to merge with another former Atrius doctors group, Southboro Medical Group, but has remained an independent entity until now.
Central Massachusetts physician group Reliant Medical Group is looking to be acquired by OptumCare, a deal that will help the physician group update its facilities and bolster its IT. OptumCare, a for-profit health care system that is a subset of UnitedHealth-owned health management company Optum, includes 17,000 primary care providers and specialists. The acquisition would be Optum’s first venture into the Massachusetts provider market, and would put Optum’s technology and network at Reliant’s 25 locations throughout the state.
